Beavering Away

It’s been a rather special day today in the Beaver Scouting life of our eldest having completed his project for and being awarded with the Chief Scouts Bronze Award.

This is the highest award that a Beaver can obtain and for a seven year old is quite exacting and pretty hard work.

The basic premise being that a Beaver Scout will have earned several other badges to qualify to take this and then have to complete a six plus week project for presentation to their peers in the Beaver Colony.

Fred decided he wanted to do a presentation on the solar system and produced a display of the nine (yes he did include Pluto!) major planets and read out a little research he had done on each.

As you can imagine the sewing kit had to come out pretty much as soon as he returned and he pretty much grinned his way to bed.

‘Oh Dad, did I tell you that it takes ‘Uranus’ 84 years to go round the Sun and that it spins on it side’

‘Indeed several times, as does your Mother in a slightly different context regarding the shelves she asked me to put up a few months ago’

‘Oh and the big red spot on Jupiter, it’s a storm you know. It’s bigger than the whole Earth. ‘

‘Yes, I know, it’s really interesting…. Time for sleep now though….Night’

‘And Saturn……..’

Repeat to fade……

Well do give our congratulations to young Fred. Not only has he earned this coveted badge but he can now bore you to tears endlessly with stuff you already knew.
Aren't children wonderful?

He'll start on the extra solar planets next...

Surely better he enjoys this stuff than the mindless garbage most modern youngsters enjoy though?

JMB - I will, thank you. And I don't think I will ever get bored with this stuff.

Crushed - Absolutely right. I'm not a pushy parent at all, but as soon as I spotted he had an interest it was straight in there with the books, interactive programmes and getting him up at 02.00hrs to watch a lunar eclipse etc etc

Congratulations to Fred! That is a great achievement! When does he move up to Cubs, then?

One of our Scouts was awarded his Chief Scout's Gold Award on St. George's Day, and we're hoping a few more will over the next few months.

Know just what you mean - my eldest (who has the advantage of autism to intensify his focus) started his very first day of football training on Saturday, played his first game on Sunday and already has announced himself an 'expert' on soccer.

Sadly he seelf to have the facts to back this claim up - especially compared to my knowledge.

Good to see, pity more children didn't show the same enthusiasm to learn about things like that instead of being cemented in front of a television or games console. Congrats to your young man.
